Mobilise resources, UGC chief tells universities

Tirupati: UGC Chairman Ved Prakash called upon the universities to earnestly work hard for mobilisation of resources to stand on their own legs.

Speaking at a citation function at Sri Venkateswara University here on Friday, the UGC Chairman asked universities to take initiative for mobilisation of resources so as to ensure quality, creative education and to boost up research. The departments in the universities should work together and competitively to bring resources from various organs of state, he said adding that there are several departments and ministries within the State government that are left untapped. Research is truly international and knowledge cannot be achieved without collaboration, he said adding that universities also require the support of the state.

Ved Prakash said that main objective of the universities is to empower the youth. He added that the temples of learning should strive for scientific advancement, egalitarian society and to produce talented and strive for scientific advancement. The citation function was held to honour Padma Bhushan Prof Srinivasa SR Varadhan, Abel Prize Laureate 2007, New York University, USA, who has been awarded the ‘Fellow of Indian Society for Probability and Statistics’.

The SVU’s Department of Statistics and Mathematics organised the function in which Ved Prakash was also felicitated. Later, Ved Prakash declared open the ‘e-class room’ set up under UGC XII Plan grant in the university. SVU Vice-Chancellor A Damodaram, UGC member Inder Mohan Kapahi and others were present.
