Kurnool: The State government has sanctioned Rs 250 crore for securing fodder in drought-affected mandals, Agriculture Minister Pulla Rao said on Wednesday in Allur village of Uyyalavada mandal. Speaking after inaugurating a Rs 2-a-kg grass distribution programme, he stated that each bundle of grass was worth Rs 7. He appealed to the people to avail themselves of the facility.

The Minister said two types of grass were being provided to avert shortage of fodder in drought-hit mandals, with 90 and 75 per cent subsidy. The government was ready to provide any quantity of subsidised grass. Rao praised villagers for achieving good milk production. He said the government was giving importance to agriculture and its related sectors.

Farmers should utilise modern implements being offered at subsidised rates for achieving higher production with less investment. He asserted that there was no shortage of funds for the farm sector. The implements included solar pump sets, which would be given Rs 4.5 lakh subsidy on an investment of Rs 50,000.

The Minister called upon farmers to increase production of cattle utilising all facilities being provided by the government. He said 4,000 posts in the Agriculture and Animal Husbandry departments would be filled. About 500 doctors would be appointed in veterinary hospitals. Rao stated that efforts would be made to set up a vegetable storage centre in Kurnool.

He advised farmers to go in for farm ponds in their lands. District Collector Ch Vijaymohan said villages have been divided into units to overcome severe drought in the district. He commended the programme as ideal for providing relief in drought areas. He offered to dig free bore wells in the command area if farmers submitted applications. Dairy units would be opened for providing more employment opportunities.
