Nellore: Dr Srinagesh Davuluri, Chief Scientist, Head-Seismology Observatory, National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), Hyderabad, said the tremors in Nellore district (close to Prakasam district border) were only microearthquakes that were normal in many parts of the country.

He, along with District Joint Collector A.Md.Imtiyaz, addressed the media on Friday evening and said the seismic activity in the region has been very mild and people need not worry about possible huge disasters in the areas. He said a team of three scientists including himself are going to conduct studies on tectonic activity in the villages of Vinjamuru, Duttaluru, Varikuntapady and Udayagiri mandals where people experienced frequent tremors since Oct 17.

He said they had found there was no need to get panic since the tremors were recorded within a depth of 4-5 km with low magnitude of 1.7-2.7 on Richter scale. He analysed that there were five microearthquakes in the region and only on Oct 17 the intensity was 2.7 and it decreased to 1.7 on Jan 19. Three quakes were below the intensity of 1.9, he pointed out.

He said they had interacted on Friday with Tahsildars of Vinjamuru, Duttaluru, Varikuntapadu and Udayagiri at Vinjamuru Tahsildar’s office and collected information from them. They visited Chakalikonda village in the mandal and collected direct experiences of the local population.

Dr Nagesh categorically stated that there was no relationship between Gundlakamma tectonic fault and the current tremors in Nellore district. He said Seismographs have been installed in Vinjamur and Varikuntapadu mandals (for recording the tremors for better understanding on motion of the ground during a quake).

He admitted that there was a fault at Gundlakamma river mouth but it cannot influence the distant places in Nellore district and the study would dispel misconceptions and fears among local population. He said they would also be utilising the data from the seismographs at Srikalahasti in Chittoor and Addanki in Prakasam districts for validating the local data. He said there would not be any problem for local constructions, since majority were found to be according to the guidelines to prevent seismic hazards.

NGRI Chief Scientist said the epicenter was not constant during recent mild quakes and they were concentrated within a span of 5-6 km in the region. He said their Institute was closely monitoring neo-tectonic activity at Gundlakamma Fault by placing 3 seismic stations in Prakasam district. ANS Sarma and G Suresh of NGRI were other members of the team who started investigations.
