Rajahmundry: Need for comprehensive health scheme was stressed upon by the participants of Dasa-Disa programme organised by HMTV here on Saturday. The programme was organised to focus on the health sector and to highlight key problems that the health sector was facing in the State as well as the country. Many eminent personalities and students from in and around Rajahmundry participated in the debate held at GSL Medical College in Rajanagaram.

In his inaugural comments, Lok Satta Party national president Dr Jayaprakash Narayan lamented that India was spending only 1 to 1.20 per cent of its national wealth on health sector whereas most of the countries spend more than eight per cent.

He also observed that 75 per cent common people in the country are spending on health from their pockets. Most of the speakers opined that relation between doctor and patients had strained very severely. They said that the medical education had become very expensive and that was adding to the woes of the common people.

Dr Chandramohan who was one of the participants said that it was not easy for the private hospitals to provide treatment at a cheaper rate under prevailing conditions. Speakers like Dr Babji explained that professors and assistant professors should play a key role in transforming healthcare system and advocated for good salaries for professors.

Taking part in the discussion, former Minister and MLC Pilli Subhash Chandra Bose advocated for health insurance scheme which could protect health interests of the people. Jaggampeta MLA Jyothula Nehru said the government should act on humanitarian grounds with regard to healthcare. He observed that lack of monitoring from the government and expensive treatment were hurting common people.

Rajahmundry MP M Murali Mohan opined that the prevention was better than cure. He observed that child marriages are cause for concern, particularly in East Godavari. He also stressed on the need for health insurance scheme and advocated awareness campaign on health insurance among the public.
