Deputy Transport Commissioner (DTC) V Sundar on Monday said that majority of the road accidents among the youth is due to the lack of awareness on the rules to be followed while using a vehicle.

Speaking at a seminar on ‘Road Safety’ held at the Lorry Owners Association Hall, as part of the 27th National Road Safety Week celebrations to educate people on traffic rules, Sundar said that majority of the road accident victims are aged between 16 to 30 years of age.

Special focus would be laid in the road safety week programmes through creating awareness among the youth about the usage of helmet and other safety measures to be followed while using the roads, he said.

The DTC said Police alone cannot regulate traffic and imposing fines would not serve the purpose. “Vehicle users should be self-disciplined,” he stressed.

He urged the youth to wear helmet and avoid driving drunk during late hours. He also pointed out that most of the road accidents occur either due to the driver’s negligence, problem in the vehicle or because of bad roads. Drivers must be very cautious while driving as they are responsible for several lives, he said.

The Krishna district Lorry Owners Association (KDLOA) President KV Ramesh said that people must stop the habit of jumping traffic signals, vehicles should not be overtake from the wrong side on the highways to avoid road accident mishap. The KDLOA general secretaries Sunkara Ramesh Babu, YV Eswar Rao and other members of the association were present.
