Visakhapatnam: India’s lone aircraft carrier INS Viraat made its last voyage and arrived here on Monday to participate in the International Fleet Review which will begin on February 4. After the IFR, the ship will remain here and wait till decommissioning for which a date would be set by the Defence Ministry.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu is one among the many bidders who sought to turn it into a museum. Naval sources said AP is the strong contender for the vessel as the INS Kurusura has already been established here.

“The AP government has sent the proposals and the Defence Ministry is seriously considering them,’’ said a senior naval official. The warhorse of Indian Navy, Viraat, had a service life of 56 years — first as HMS Hermes in the Royal British Navy and in its present form since 1987.

Viraat remained for well over a decade the sole aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean region following the decommissioning of the first Indian carrier INS Vikrant in 1997.
