Vizag gears up for electrifying Le Panga

Visakhapatnam: For a man who brought the best of sports infrastructure during his stint as the Chief Minister of the undivided Andhra Pradesh, N Chandrababu Naidu is getting an opportunity to showcase his organisational acumen on a platter.

Saturday night fever will grip the Port Indoor Stadium’s Rajeev Gandhi Sports Complex here, when a razzmatazz of glamour from tinsel town and sports will set the floor on fire while participating in the colourful ceremony that has been lined up to mark the commencement of the third edition of the hugely popular Pro Kabaddi League (PKL).

Glamour is not coming just in the form of the League’s Brand Ambassador Rana Daggubati but also with the presence of Bollywood celebrities Aamir Khan and Aditi Rao Hydari, who will render the national anthem. It has been a signature style of PKL to have a celebrity singing the national anthem before the commencement of the first match of each day of the championship.

Chandrababu Naidu will formally inaugurate the third edition of Le Panga by 6pm subsequent to which the first leg of this edition of PKL will get underway. If the eight-team PKL has emerged as the second most popular event after cricket in terms of television audience, it has also been able to draw enthusiastic crowds to the stadium wherever the matches have been held in the earlier two editions.

Such has been the popularity of the rugged rustic sport that local fans lined up to buy tickets so as to catch the action in flesh and blood than live on the small screen. Given the form of the teams in contention the campaign opener featuring host Telugu Titans and defending champions U Mumba is likely to be a nail-biting affair, which has been a hallmark of almost all matches in the first two editions.

According to the co-owner of Titans, Srinivas Sriramaneni, the tea m is raring to go. Apart from the charismatic captain, Rahul Chaudhary, the teams can bank on proven talents like Sukesh Hedge and Prashant Raj.

U Mumba, looking formidable as ever, is all prepared to take on the Titans, which will expect a partisan spectator support on its home turf. Mumbai will rely on the skills of Rishank Devadiga, the do-or-die raid specialist and two good corner men in Surendar Nada and Mohit Chillar.
