10 years of MGNREGS launch
Anantapur: Vice-President of AICC Rahul Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, accompanied by a host of Congress leaders including LS floor leader Mallikharjuna Kharge, will visit for a day Bandlapalli, in Narpala mandal of Anantapur district, on Tuesday.
To mark the MGNREGS completing a decade on this day, Rahul will interact with rural beneficiaries at Bandlapalli, where the UPA-I government launched the scheme in 2006. Rahul will speak with workers, representatives of NGOs and Sarpanches and share lunch with them. "Rahul will interact with the MGNREGS workers, some NGOs and Sarpanches.
He will have lunch with them before addressing a public meeting in the village," a Congress leader said."Will visit Bandlapalli, Anantapur on 2nd Feb to commemorate 10 yrs of MGNREGS. It was from this village that Prime Minister Manmohan Singhji & Congress President Sonia Gandhiji in 2006 had launched the historic MGNREGS," Rahul tweeted last week.
Sonia and Dr Singh had launched the scheme on February 2, 2006 (then covering 200 districts) to provide livelihood and security to millions of poor in villages. The UPA government had described it as "a landmark (programme) in our history for removing poverty from the face of the nation". The MGNREG scheme, later extended country-wide, seeks to provide at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in a year.
