To stage dharnas before all AP Collectorates today

Hyderabad: The TDP, which is still grappling with the agitation by Kapus demanding immediate implementation of the election promise providing reservation under BC list, is now faced with a threat of counter-agitation from the BCs who are opposed to the proposal to include Kapus in the list of BCs.

TDP MLA and National Backward Classes (BC) Welfare Association president R Krishnaiah on Wednesday gave a call for holding of dharnas in front of Collectorates on Thursday across Andhra Pradesh. He said, “BCs will show their power by organising a meeting in every district with over five lakh BCs.” He demanded the AP Chief Minister to take immediate steps to fulfill his 16 promises mentioned in the party manifesto.

He called upon the BCs in 138 castes to join the agitation and make Chandrababu Naidu to revert his decision on Kapus. When asked by The Hans India whether he was not aware of the promise made by the party when he joined TDP, Krishnaiah evaded a direct reply. He said, “Let me make it clear. For me the interest of BCs is most important and I am not bothered about anything else.”

He said let the government constitute a BC commission and give separate quota to Kapus. The Constitution does not permit to include Kapus in the BC list. We have no problem if government can create a special quota for them based on their population and also if it gives a special economic package but it cannot cut into the BC quota and include them in the list of BCs.

How it is to be done, the government has to look into it, he added. When asked if his decision does not amount to violation of party discipline, he refused to entertain any other question on the issue and said that he strongly condemns and opposes the unilateral decision of the AP Chief Minister on the issue of Kapus.

Interestingly, the YSRCP on Thursday said that while they support the reservations for Kapus they also do not want the BCs to suffer. According to party spokesperson Ambati Rambabu, reservations to Kapus should not be at the cost of BCs. However, they are not participating in the dharna in front of Collectorates on Thursday, he said.
