Over five lakh people took a holy dip at the mouth of Gosthani river in Bhimili on the occasion of  Mahodayam, the auspicious day of Magha Maasam. It is believed that bathing at the holy confluence is believed to wash away one’s sins.

Visakhapatnam: Over five lakh people took a holy dip at the mouth of Gosthani river in Bhimili on the occasion of Mahodayam, the auspicious day of Magha Maasam. It is believed that bathing at the holy confluence is believed to wash away one’s sins.

Mahodayam is being observed after a gap of 33 years. Minister for Endowments P Manikyala Rao was one among the early people who took bath at the estuary along with this family members and offered prayers. The police made elaborate arrangements to avoid any untoward incidents and cautioned people on taking bath deep in the sea.

Around 11 people died during the last Mahodayam. “The IFR shadowed the importance of the festival. Otherwise a million people would have converged at the Gosthani river mouth,’’ said a senior police officer.
