Srikakulam: Severe drinking water problem will arise in municipal towns as well as rural areas in Srikakulam in coming summer as water level in rivers and tanks is sinking.

Due to 40 per cent less rain fall in the district during recent kharif season, water levels reduced alarmingly in rivers and reservoirs, and also at barrages and tanks by February first week. Present situation is a sign for more trouble in coming summer for drinking water.

There are as many as 956 safe drinking water schemes across the district. Out of them, 15 schemes are not working.

Another 35 schemes are under repairs. Of the remaining 906 schemes, more than half water schemes will face severe water scarcity by first week of March Water release into Nagavali river was not possible this year from Madduvalasa and Thotapalli reservoirs as water levels are reduced in these reservoirs up to three meters lower than its maximum storage capacity.

“Due to very low inflows into Thotapalli and Madduvalasa reservoirs, water level came down to 102 meters and 62 meters in both the reservoirs against their maximum levels 105 and 65 meters respectively. We are unable to release water into Nagavali river,” Superintendent Engineer (SE) of Thotapalli Dola Tirumala Rao and SE of Irrigation Circle Sanapala VenkataRamana Rao informed ‘The Hans India’.

“As a result of continuous dry spell for the last seven months, inflows almost stopped at Gotta Barrage in Vamsadhara river and we already stopped water to right main canal (RMC) and releasing less water to left main canal (LMC) for survival of some rabi crops and it will be stopped automatically in two weeks,” SE of Vamsadhara Circle Bhojaraju AppalaNaidu and Deputy Executive Engineer (DEE) of Gotta Barrage M Prabhakar explained to this newspaper.

“If the same conditions continued, water problem will intensify in more than 500 villages by end of February in Kotturu, Sitampeta, Palakonda, Veeragattam, Amudalavalasa, Gara, Polaki, Ponduru, Burja, Bhamini and other mandals. We are planning to repair bores and remove silt in wells. We deputed teams at segment level to supply water through tankers if required,” said Rural Water Supply (RWS) SE R Ravindranadh.
