Visakhapatnam: The district administration is preparing to launch passenger vessels from the slipway jetty built at the fishing harbour from this weekend.

The slipway jetty was built for the convenience of foreign navies which recently participated in the International Fleet Review. The Visakhapatnam Port Trust built the jetty at a cost of Rs 2 crore. This is prelude to the cruise being planned by the department of tourism with Visakhapatnam Port Trust.

Minister for HRD Ganta Srinivasa Rao convened a review meeting with the Collector and other senior officials to make best use of the slipway jetty. The Minister said the launch of passenger vessels would boost tourism in the State.

He said it was Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who inaugurated the jetty on February 4, asked him to use the jetty for propelling tourism.

The Minister also suggested that the agreement with the Agency, which built the jetty, should be extended further in view of the decision to launch the passenger vessels.

Collector Dr N Yuvaraj told the Minister that he asked some of the leading hotels in the city to build restaurant and cafeteria to meet the needs of the tourists. The Minister told the Collector that the service should be inaugurated by end of this week.
