Vijayawada: The attempt by the officials to evict the poor living on the Chennai-Kolkata National Highway to facilitate the flyover for inner ring road has given rise to ‘new war’ in city politics. While the ruling party legislator Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan opposed the move and had held a protest in support of people on Sunday, the Leader of Opposition Y S Jaganmohan Reddy visited the victims and extended support on Monday.

The issue is also causing ripples in the ruling party with the local legislator Vamsi supporting the poor against eviction while the government is insisting on eviction. The officials have diverted the flyover to join the national highway at Ramavarappadu and have already evicted 120 houses from there to lay the approach road. As the approach road is getting ready, the officials on Sunday made an attempt to issue eviction notices to the residents of 500 houses, including a mosque, which led to commotion in the area.

The residents held a protest and squatted on the national highway, blocking the vehicular traffic. On learning about the incident, the legislator Vamsi Mohan reached the spot and sat in the demonstration. He had asked the officials to go back as he was planning to take a delegation to the Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to resolve the issue.

The officials, who returned without serving eviction notices, have lodged a complaint with the Patamata police alleging that the legislator had caused obstruction to their duties. The police too have registered cases against the legislator.

Reacting to the cases booked against him, the ruling party legislator said that he would not even seek station bail and was ready to go to the jail. He said he did not prevent the officials from discharging their duties but had requested them to postpone it as he was planning to take up the issue with the Chief Minister. However, Deputy Chief Minister and the Home Minister N Chinarajappa, said that the police would proceed further on the case registered against the legislator.
