Hyderabad: The craze for seats in Telangana private engineering colleges among Andhra Pradesh students seems to have taken a nosedive. According to the data available with the Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE), only 576 Andhra candidates got final admissions into the engineering courses offered in the private engineering colleges for the academic year 2015-16 against nearly 2,000 candidates in 2014-15 academic year.

More number of students belonging to Andhra University region preferred to join colleges than students of Sri Venkateswara University region in Telangana colleges. According to the data, as many as 359 students from AU, 217 from SVU and 219 non-local candidates took admissions for the academic year 2015-16.

Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad districts are hubs for engineering colleges in the State. Every year, scores of students take admissions in colleges for better career and placement options. The officials attributed the decline in the number of final admissions to the State bifurcation and fee reimbursement. Officials said even as the AP government had assured to refund tuition fee, the apprehensive parents joined their wards in their State.

Similar is the case with the polytechnic courses. While about 1,200 candidates took admissions during the academic year 2014-15, this year only 188 (SVU-116+ AU-72) candidates took final admissions in the polytechnic courses.“The number of candidates taking admissions in Telangana will further decline in the next academic year. Even Andhra Pradesh has some elite colleges that they will prefer as they have better prospects there than in Telangana,” said an official.
