Nellore: Questions are being raised whether private players will reap the benefits of proposed international schools to be established by the State government under Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) model. It may be recalled that the State government had proposed 3 international schools at Nellore, Visakhapatnam, and Tirupati on PPP mode. In the district, the administration had allocated 16 acres of land for the proposed international school at Bodduvaripalem in Kodavalur mandal.

The state government planned to improve quality in education by roping in private players for providing world class standards in the region. “These schools adopt a curriculum on the lines of International Baccalaureate (IB) and International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) by the University of Cambridge International and others. These international schools provide an opportunity to develop cross cultural understanding and also to build good relationships with people from varied ethnic groups,” said Prof K Ramakrishna Rao, a retired professor in education.

Experts are of the view how the government would benefit by establishing international schools when they are managed by private institutions. “This is just providing infrastructure and others sops to private institutions, who were already making huge profits. Now, many corporate schools are facing criticism for their continuous pressure for good results on students that was finally leading to suicides.

How, they can avoid such tendencies in these schools and what assurance they can give for providing tension-free instruction?” asked SV Mallikarjunam, senior manager of a nationalised bank. Further, the State government had already engaged Infrastructure Corporation of Andhra Pradesh (INCAP) which invited expression of interest for setting up these schools on PPP mode with an estimated cost of Rs 62.6 crore at Bodduvaripalem in Nellore district and also at Surappakasam, close to Tirupati, and another school at Adavivaram in Visakhapatnam with Rs 93.4 crore.

For Nellore school, Request for Proposals (RFP) second call issued on December 30, 2015, pre-bid meeting was conducted on January 19 this year and the last date for bid submission is February 15, 2016.
