Vijayawada: Keeping in view the urgent need for providing uninterrupted power supply to the camp office of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and other important offices in the VVIP zone at Suryaraopet area in the city, the Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (SPDCL) officials have made proposals for laying the underground cable network in the VVIP zone at the earliest. The SPDCL has conducted the survey and has recently sent proposals to the higher officials in Tirupati to get the nod.

It may be noted here that the camp office of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, office of the DGP, Collector’s camp office, Joint Collector’s office, Sub-Collector’s office, Police Commissioner’s office and other offices are located in the VVIP zone area. In spite of laying new lines and installing new transformers, the power supply interruption is common in the area due to gales and winds during the rainy season.

To avoid such problem in the future, the SPDCL has decided to install underground cable network to these offices. Speaking to The Hans India, SPDCL Superintending Engineer M Vijay Kumar said that the department is ready to install underground cable network once the higher officials give permission for it. He said separate power connections will be given to the offices located in the VVIP zone. He said though the underground network is expensive, it is very useful.

Once the cables are installed, the existing poles and wires will be removed from the VVIP zone. This will be the first area in the city to have underground cable network. The cost of the project is estimated between Rs 8 and 10 crore. The SPDCL SE said the proposals have also been made to provide underground cable network on MG Road, Eluru Road, Mogalrajpuram, Besant Road and other areas in the city. Meanwhile, the SPDCL Vijayawada division is gearing up to meet the demand for power in the summer.

So far, the demand for power in the city is 2.3 million units and it is expected to increase to 2.7 million units by May and June. The department is installing five more sub-stations and 125 transformers in the city in the next three months to meet the requirements of power users. So far, 3,000 transformers are in the city and more are needed in some commercial areas like Eluru Road and Besant Road.
