Veil no impediment for success

Meet the Hyderabad’s veiled businesswoman. Covered in a black abaya from head to toe, Dr Nowhera Sheikh is the brainbox behind the Heera Group, a lofty empire of 20 companies with several coveted awards testifying her shrewd business acumen.
The latest addition being the ‘Most Promising Newcomer Brand’ award to Nowhera’s company ‘Heera Foodex’ at the Gulfood 2016 that was held at the Dubai World Trade Centre, recently.
Heera Foodex is Heera Group’s venture into food manufacturing and packaging business, with the conglomerate setting up a large-scale food manufacturing and packaging unit in Sharjah Airport International Free Zone in 2015. It also set up a similar unit in the State seizing the maiden slot in the sector after the formation of Telangana.
The Heera Foodex plant was inaugurated by Dy Chief Minister Mahmood Ali in January last year. While the headquarters are in Hyderabad, Dr Nowhera frequently globe trots, mostly to Dubai and other countries in the Middle East, which she considers her second home. She is the only woman to be named in the book ‘Super 100’, a business directory listing the most successful Indians in the Middle East and South Africa.
Behind her international charisma, largely in the Middle East, as a business empress, she is a philanthropist, an educationist and an Islamic scholar. Shuttling between her business management, she is also human rights activist and a protagonist of woman rights and women empowerment. She says, “The veil must not be conceived as an impediment to success”.
Dr Nowhera is striving for educating women and has set up many schools for Islamic and modern education. She maintains that, “Fearing and knowing that God is watching our deeds helps us remain honest. And honesty is the key to success.” In line with her Islamic upbringing, Dr Nowhera stresses for an interest-free model of business.
Her latest venture is an online commerce platform HeeraDeals.com that aims to bring the convenience of shopping to the comforts of handhelds and smartphones. From setting up a travel agency in Dubai in her early days to making Dubai her second home and striving business market, Heera Group has come a long way and continues to be one of the few Indian companies recognized outside India, especially in the Middle East.
