Vizianagaram: The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) Chairman post appears to have no takers from opposition parties in both the Telugu States. Despite the importance of the post, the opposition leaders are hesitant to take the post, owing to the bitter experiences of previous holders of the post.

The PAC Chairman post is usually offered to a senior MLA from opposition party. It offers the opposition leaders an opportunity to keep a close watch on the government by collecting facts and figures related to the implementation of various welfare schemes. The PAC Chairman also holds the authority to conduct review meetings with the District Collector and other officials.

This allows him to point out flaws in implementation of those schemes. This is considered to be a good opportunity for the opposition parties to prove their efficiency and fix the government by questioning it in Assembly. However, the PAC Chairman post, in past few years has been reduced to a toothless watchdog.

Apart from the reduction of its powers, there are some other incidents that are forcing the opposition leaders to stay away from it. For instance, Narayankhed former MLA, P Kishta Reddy and former MLA of Palair constituency, Ramreddy Venkat Reddy had earlier held the PAC Chairman posts in Telangana. Both of them died recently. The post in the State still remains vacant.

In AP, the post was offered to Nandyal MLA, Bhuma Nagireddy. But recently he, he along with his daughter and Allagadda MLA, Akhila Priya, quit the YSRCP and joined the ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Now the YSRCP in Andhra Pradesh is looking for a new member to nominate for the post.

According to the party sources, Punganur MLA, Peddireddy Ramachandra Reddy, Jaggampeta MLA, Jyopthula Nehru, Bobbili MLA, RVSK Ranga Rao are under consideration for the post in Andhra Pradesh. YSR Congress chief Jagan is reportedly discussing with senior leaders regarding this appointment. But the party sources said, none of these MLAs are interested to take charge.
