'Consumers should be vigilant about their rights and should exercise them with responsibility', said District Legal Metrology inspector T Shalem Raju on Tuesday at the awareness session organised by Jan Shikshan Sansthan to mark ‘World Consumer Rights Day’ at St Ann’s Social Service Center.

Shalem Raju stressed that consumers should be aware of their rights and check the maximum retail price and the quality of products before purchasing. “They should check the contents and quantity of the products before buying them. It is necessary to obtain bills for all purchases.

Before buying any product, the consumers should always look for the maximum retail price printed on it. The expiry date of the products, especially eatables or medicines, should be noted. Consumers should see if the name and address of the manufacturer is printed on each product. This will help them buy quality products, he said.

He also pointed out that several consumers get carried away by advertisements. He felt that many people in rural areas are not keen on revealing the injustice of traders and claim compensation from them. There is an urgent need to simplify the rules to claim compensation, he said.

“The Consumer Rights Day was observed to put an end to such things and educate the consumers on their rights, duties and the protection (they get) under the law,” he further added. JSS assistant program officer V Sridevi, assistant coordinator K Gopi and others were also present at the event.
