Amaravati: The move by the chilli traders to halt purchase of chilli stock on Thursday, to support the call for bandh by chamber of commerce, turned ugly. Enraged farmers staged an impromptu protest against the yard officials and the traders at the Mirchi Yard in Guntur in a bid to mount pressure for immediate purchase of stock.

Traffic was worst hit, the vehicle were stranded on the either side of the road leading to the yard. The farmers warned that they would continue with the protest until the traders start purchase of chilli. “We cannot stay for two or three-days with chilli stocks,” the farmers shouted in unison and some even pelted the stones at the yard office.

Later, farmers staged a rasta-roko and the police were called into action and brought the situation under control. The police officials and yard officials held discussions with the traders and they agreed to start purchases.

Meanwhile, joint Collector and person-in-charge for Guntur Mirch Yard, Cherakuri Sridhar introduced steps to introduce bar coding system for chilli bags to check irregularities. The trail run for the same is underway and this is being introduced as a part of e-trading.
