Audio engineer Barry Hogan takes students on a historic journey of audio through the decades and enlightens on hearing vs. listening

It was a sultry afternoon; Barry Hogan had just been introduced to Hyderabadi Dum Biryani and was gearing up for his workshop on Music Production. The students at BITS Pilani, Shameerpet were waiting, not quite sure what was in store for them.

They knew that Barry had worked on platinum selling albums, mixed orchestras at the academy awards, toured with Grammy winning artistes, but what was he going to do in the workshop?

Terms and jargons on sound such as sample rates, plugins, DAWs, mixers and other techie stuff was what the students expected, and they couldn’t have been farther from the truth.

Once the workshop started, Barry spent a considerable time talking about hearing vs listening. Soon the students forgot all about their engineering ‘jargon’ and began to see the truth from Barry’s perspective. He mesmerised students taking them on a tour through audio through the past decades.

Next up he gave some tips and simple but profound tricks on maximising efficiency while recording. Setting up personal templates that can be used on a variety of situations stunned the students.

Last but not least, he spoke about the importance of music business and ensuring that artistes and engineers protect their art form. The Q&A session originally scheduled for 15 minutes spanned out to over an hour. All in all the students learnt and experienced way more than they had originally expected.
