An awareness rally on tuberculosis was organised by the Krishna District TB control Committee of Medical, Health and Family Welfare Department on the occasion of World TB Day in the city on Thursday.

The rally was flagged off by District Medical Health Officer (DMHO) R Naga Malleswari at Old Government Hospital. The rally passed through Eluru Road, Old Bus Stand and held a meeting at Indian Medical Association Hall.

Addressing the gathering, Naga Malleswari said, “TB is a curable disease and added that under the Revised National Tuberculosis Program (RNTP) free medication was provided to TB patients across the district.

More than 20,000 persons are daily infected by tuberculosis and 1000 die every day due to the deadly disease across the country. Most of the dead patients are those who left treatment midway as one such defaulting patient infects 15 to 20 more persons.”
