Guntur: Even after finding its place in the new capital of Andhra Pradesh, Guntur city is far away from providing basic amenities to people. The road network in Guntur city is at its worst possible condition. Though the government announced that the new capital will be built at international standards, the quality of roads in Guntur is not even on par with national standards.

Almost all the roads in the city have become non-commutable with pits and patches. With the announcement of AP capital and by including Guntur as part of the Capital Region, the city was witnessing heavy commercial activity. People from all over the State and Telangana are visiting the city on various purposes.

Those who wanted to set up their business in the new capital and those who wanted to buy a piece of land in and around the capital are coming in droves. Even the Chief Minister, the Ministers and the officials are frequent visitors to the city. With this, the traffic has increased manifold in the last 18 months. But the roads were not developed accordingly. One cannot find a single road in the city which facilitates free flow of traffic.

Every road in the city is filled with pits and patches. The situation has degraded to the extent that people are sarcastically saying that "Orthopedic and neuro doctors are having good practice in Guntur with the ill-fate of city's commuters". Sambi Reddy, a senior citizen recalled the original name Guntaluru which transformed as Guntur over the time. He says though the name has changed, the city still symbolises its old name.

Predicting an increase in city's traffic, the municipal officials prepared proposals for widening of busy roads. Chuttugunta to Palnadu busstop road is proposed to be expanded from existing 80 ft to 100 ft, Palnadu busstop to GMC road from 80 to 120 ft, old Guntur road from 30 to 40 ft, Suddapalli Donka road from 40 to 60 ft, Koretapadu road from 60 to 120 ft, Brodipet 4th line from 30 to 40 ft are among others.

But all these proposals remained on paper and may not see light of the day in near future. Whereas, hectic traffic has made once broader roads narrow and cramped. Lack of proper parking facilities and the encroachments added to woes of citizens.
