Visakhapatnam: Although the Met forecast of better than normal monsoon is making people happy, they seem to be facing a dilemma over the likelihood of severe hot weather conditions prevailing in the coming three months, more so because of the rains occurring during summer due to the El Nino effect.

It appears that hot weather conditions are having a severe impact on the two Telugu States, with no rain occurring. Crops in thousands of acres have dried up, with the soil developing cracks. Even bore-well water has become scarce because of the severe drought prevailing in many districts in the two States. As a result the levels in many reservoirs have touched dead storage level.

Telangana recorded 25 per cent deficit rainfall, receiving 438 mm as against the normal of 586 mm and Rayalaseema 19 per cent. The monsoon scenario was slightly better than the average in the coastal districts, more so in the Godavari districts, Krishna and Guntur.

The other districts like Prakasam, Nellore and north-coastal areas have been badly hit. The Rayalaseema region has been the worst hit, with widespread drought severely impacting the lives of both people and cattle. It may be recalled that due to the El Nino effect drought prevailed in many parts of the country during the period 2001-2004 resulting in hundreds of suicides by farmers in the two States, besides Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The El Nino effect is going to be more severe this year.According to weather expert Bhanukumar, because of the increasing industrialisation the earth’s day temperature is going up by two degrees every 50 years. This is having a serious effect on both people and crops.

Thanks to the tricky weather conditions last year, the monsoon struck Telangana a week before the summer, bringing cheer to the people, particularly farmers. Although the Met department predicted normal rain throughout the year in South India, the scenario changed within a month, as there were no rains. The same scene was repeated in the next month during the kharif season.
