People from far off places like neighbouring Karnataka also turn out to watch the events. The district comes alive with the celebration of the events. Kairuppala village in Aspari mandal of the district was the venue for hurling cow dung cakes. The whole village will be divided into two to take part in the event, which has a religious significance.
The event is uniqe not only in the State, but also across the country. Veerabhadra and Bhadrakali temple in Kairuppala is one of the significant temples in the State. As part of the Brahmotsavam celebrations of Lord Veerabhadraswamy, the event of hurling cakes is celebrated annually. On Saturday the event - centuries’ old practice was celebrated with devotion and dedication.
The mock fight between Veerabhadraswamy and Bhadrakali hurling cakes by one group on the rival group earned reputation as ‘Pidakala Samaram’. The Dalits, Kammara and Golla community members side with Goddess Bhadrakalai and rest of the communities side with Veerabhadraswamy and hurl cow dunk cakes on each other.
The result of the competition is everybody’s knowledge. In spite of that, people take part in the event and hurl dunk cakes with a vengeance to win the competition. Once the event is concluded, both the sides celebrate Brahmotsavam of the presiding deities. The event concludes with the celestial wedding of Lord Veerabhadraswamy with His consort Bhadrakali.
According to Chowdeswari temple priest Gopalaswamy, another incident that creates a lot of interest is donkey race organised as part of the Chowdeswari Devi Utsavam at Kalluru in the city. As part of the celebrations, donkey race is organised. Prior to a week from organising the event, mud path is created around the temple.
On Ugadi Day, bullock-cart races with carts having stone wheels are organised. But, the next day donkey races are organised. Young, old and children will take part in the events with enthusiasm. Each year, the popularity of the event is increasing.
