Amalapuram (East Godavari): An expert and trainer of an ancient and dying martial art form, Chedi Talimkhana, Junior Abbireddy Ramdas passed away on Sunday while undergoing treatment at a private hospital here.

He was the third generation practitioner of the art. His ancestors used the martial art to fight the British rulers during the freedom struggle. The ancient art form rose to prominence after it was featured in Telugu movie Maghadeera. Ramdas taught the skill to many enthusiasts during the past 40 years and groomed many students. Dasara celebrations in the town assumed significance as people not only from the district but also from the State throng the place to watch Ramdas perform during the Dasara procession.

Watching Ramdas breaking coconuts, vegetables thrown in the air with a long sword, displaying his skill using swords, sticks and fire is a visual treat and hair-rising experience for many. The marital art is being promoted by family for past 160 years. In 2009, East Godavari district collector felicitated Ramdas. In 2007, Arpita Kalavahini of Visakhapatnam honored him with Andhra Ratna award. Condoling death of Ramdas, Deputy Chief Minister Nimmakayala Chinarajappa described the demise of Ramdas as a void that cannot be bridged.
