  • Nine sunstroke deaths reported in eight days

As a result, maximum temperatures are rising from three to five degrees Celsius in summer when compared to previous years. From April 4 this year temperatures started rising up to 39 and 39.5 and 40 degrees Celsius across the district which is four to five degrees higher than previous years during April first week.

Due to high temperatures nine persons died of sunstroke across the district from April 4 to 11. Of the total nine deaths three were women. The deceased were identified as Chinnala Kasayya (59) of Akkivalasa village in Saravakota mandal, Gudivada Appayya, (50) of Gulumuru village in Hira mandal, RWS assistant engineer of Narasannapeta mandal, Bommana Nagabhushan Rao (59), died while inspecting sand reaches in the River Vamsadhara, Routhu Sanyasi (65) of Aarangipeta village in Gara mandal, Nodagala Appayya (55) of Yerravaram village in Ranastalammandal and Bagadi Chakrapani (59) of Vakalavalasa village in Srikakulam rural mandal.

Women, M Karremma (60) of Loddabhadra village in Palasa mandal, Mahanthi Pydithalli (65) of G Sigadam mandal centre, M Sattemma (60) of Santhakaviti mandal centre. “We reported sunstroke deaths to the government after inquest conducted by the tahsildar, police sub inspector and mandal medical officer, said additional joint collector P Rajanikantha Rao.

People need to take precautions while moving in sunlight by carrying water, butter milk and other liquids to avoid sunstroke and should not venture out between 11 am and 3 pm, advised RIMS Government Hospital resident medical officer Dr B Ch Appala Naidu. Temperatures are rising in Srikakulam due to pollutants released from bulk drug industries, pesticide companies and expansion of concrete jungle, opined environmental scientist M BabuRao.
