Visakhapatnam: UNICEF and GITAM University on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to empower the adolescents (10-19 years) and to address their issues in Visakhapatnam district.

The district has been selected among the four in India to deal with adolescents’ issues. The other districts are Purulia, West Bengal; Sibsahar in Assam and East Singhbum in Jharkhand. The four states have been selected based on indicators related to adolescent girls particularly Visakhapatnam district was chosen as it has a high incidence of child marriage (57.4 percent) and a significantly sized tribal population, said UNICEF Chief Field Officer Ruth Leano.
