Srikakulam: The Bahuda river is looking like a desert as it’s completely dried up. Water in the river dried up due to dry spell for the past nine months in the catchment area of Bahuda river in Srikakulam district and Odisha State. In addition to dry spell, the Odisha government is not releasing water into the Bahuda river from Bhagalatti Dam which is situated in Odisha State.

It may be noted that the Bahuda river passes through Itchapuram town and it’s originated in Odisha State. In all, 50,000 people are residing in 23 wards in Itchapuram town and 67.50 lakh litres of water is required per day for the requirement of the people. But, water is not stored in infiltration tanks in the river in the wake of dry spell.

Out of 23 wards water is not being supplied in six wards in the town and residents of the wards are depending on municipal water tankers every day. “We are distributing water in all wards in the town according to time table”, said Itchapuram Municipal Commissioner Ch Satyannarayana.

“We will discuss the issue with the Odisha leaders and irrigation officials on the release of water into Bahuda river from Bhagalatti Dam to cater to the drinking water needs of the people during summer in the town with support of our local MLA B Ashok”, said municipal chairperson Pilaka Rajyalaxmi.
