Chittoor: The sign of decreasing groundwater table has opened up a new vista and the focus now is on the possible ways of recharging the groundwater. This has led to the construction of soak pits, said DWMA Project Director Venugopala Reddy. The DWMA organised an awareness camp on water conservation and management at the Collectorate here on Friday.

Addressing the gathering, the DWMA Project Director said construction of soak pits is taken up with an aim to increase the groundwater level. He promised that the government would extend required support to construct soak pits. He said that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu during his recent visit to Chittoor district had instructed District Collector Siddarth Jain to take measures to tackle water crisis in the district by constructing 1.5 lakh soak pits under Panta Sanjeevani scheme.

The DWMA Project Director said the district administration is making all efforts to complete the construction of 1.5 lakh soak pits by July. He said the district has made rapid strides in Neeru-Chettu programme with the active participation of the public and people’s representatives.

He said steps will be taken to complete repair works of check dams and percolation tanks and added that there is no dearth of funds for undertaking development works. He informed that the District Collector had already instructed panchayat secretaries, sarpanches, Janmabhoomi Committees, MPPs, MPTCs, ZPTCs, MPDOs, agriculture officers, PR and RWS executive engineers to actively take part in the programme and make it a success.

He further said that awareness camps on water conservation and management would also be conducted in Madanapalli, Kuppam, Piler and Chandragiri constituencies. ZP CEO P Kishore said building soak pits would increase the groundwater level. He said ground water levels were falling drastically due to lack of rains for the past two years.

District Panchayat Officer Prabhakara Rao said that mass construction of soak pits would be taken up in government schools, health centres and grama panchayats for water conservation and recharging groundwater. RWS SE Venugopal, Irrigation SE Ramakrishna, DWMA APD Sunil, officials of various departments in GD Nellore and Puthalapattu Assembly constituencies and people’s representatives took part in the awareness camp.
