The name audit strikes fear in the hearts of various departments, as they are known to nitpick every transaction. However, that is not the case with various government departments in East Godavari district. It is fairly evident that they care a hoot about the audit objections.

  • Government department cares a hoot for objections raised by auditors
  • 3.22 lakh objections on transactions worth Rs 1078.55 crore remain uncleared for decades
  • DAO office cannot force action apart from referring the issue to the higher ups in the department
  • Kakinada and Rajamahendravaram civic bodies top the infamous list

Though it is mandatory on the part of the respective departments to clear the objections raised by the audit department within three months, it is sad to note that these objections weren’t cleared for decades. As many as 3.22 lakh objections pertaining to transactions worth Rs 1078.55 crore have been pending from two to three years to more than three decades in the district.

Lack of accountability on the part of officials concerned coupled with no fear of departmental action, even if the transactions are misused are believed to be reasons for why the situation has spiralled out of control. Kakinada and Rajamahendravaram civic bodies top this infamous list. Each has 4,126 pending objections pertaining to transactions worth Rs 454.16 crore.

They are followed by East Godavari ZP with 3,040 objections pertaining to transactions worth Rs128.17 crore. Tuna, Peddapuram, Pithapuram, Samalkot, Ramachandrapuram, Mandapeta and Amalapuram municipalities stand third with 8,127 objections on transactions worth Rs 106.01 crore.

There is a total of 10,375 objections on transactions worth Rs 38.71 crore in Mandal Parishad's and 1.78 lakh objections on transactions worth Rs145.17 crore in gram panchayat. Even the religious institutions and varsities aren’t away from this infamous list. The Hindu religious and charitable institutions (temples and choultries) have 92,073 uncleared objections worth Rs 99.63 crore and the recently started Adikavi Nannaya University too has 150 audit objections worth Rs 6.92 crore.

Speaking to The Hans India, district audit officer (DAO) L Pierogi admitted that some of the objections raised by the department have been pending for decades. “We refer our objections, if any in the transactions to the departmental heads, after the concerned department fails to clear the objections within three-month stipulated time. Except referring to the higher ups we cannot force any actions,” he clarified.
