S Kota (Vizianagaram): Police seized prohibited tobacco products in large quantity in Srungavarapukota Mandal in Vizianagaram on Monday. Inspector K Laxmana Murthy informed that R Rajesh, a local trader has been illegally getting Khainee, Guthkha, and other tobacco products from Vizag and storing in his home at Yedla Veedhi and later supplying them to local retail traders.

After getting confidential information, Sub-Inspectors Ravi Kumar and Sagar Babu along with their staff raided the house and seized around 20 bags of prohibited tobacco products. The trader was taken into custody and a case was registered against him. Illegal transportation of Khaini and Zarda is very common in Vizianagaram district as the district has inter-State borders with Odisha and Chattisgarh.

Some traders are purchasing the products in those States at low cost and transporting here. The traders are crossing the inter-State check-posts at Kuneru and Sunki. None of these traders were caught at the check-posts. The traders are allegedly paying bribes to the check-post staff to move the illegal tobacco products into our State.

Rayagada and Koraput, in Odisha and Raipore and Durg in Chattishgar, are stated to be hubs for a supply of these tobacco products at low cost.
