Vijayawada: Thousands of people living in different parts of the city are suffering due to a supply of muddy water by Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) for the last two weeks. The falling of water levels in Prakasam barrage is one of the important reasons for the supply of muddy water.
Falling of water levels in Prakasam barrage is main reason for the problem
Residents of Arundelpet, Maruti Nagar, Sitarampuram, Chuttugunta, Gunadala, Patamata, Wynchpet, Islampet, Visalandhra Road, Bank Colony, Gayathri Nagar and other parts of the city are alleging that the VMC is supplying muddy water. One of the prime reasons for a supply of muddy and dirty water is the decline of water levels in Prakasam barrage. Till recently, the water levels declined to less three feet.
With the release of eight TMC feet of water at Nagarjuna Sagar, the water inflows started at Prakasam barrage for two days. The VMC supplies 1.75 million litres of drinking water through the pipelines and 65 overhead tanks located in three VMC circles. Due to an impact of summer and other reasons, the water levels declined from 12 feet to 3 feet during the last six months.
The efforts made by VMC to chlorinate and purify the water are also not giving fruitful results. Supply of muddy water has become regular in many parts of the city for the last two weeks. However, there is some improvement in some areas for the last one or two days due to an arrival of NS water into Prakasam barrage.
Thousands of families are purchasing drinking water cans from private plants. Each 20-litre can is being sold at Rs 20. Some private plants sell at the lesser price also. If the water can is taken to the top floors of the building, the traders charge more. Due to a supply of muddy water, the private plant operators are extracting thousands of litres groundwater in the city.
If this continues, the groundwater levels will decline. The VMC Superintending Engineer, M A Shukur, denied the reports that that muddy water was being supplied in the city. He said the VMC was making all efforts to supply clean and pure drinking water to the denizens. He further said that the VMC has the good track record on a supply of drinking water.
Quality wise, the water was better than the national average supply. He said the Prakasam barrage was getting water inflows for the last two days and there was scope to enhance the quality of drinking water to be supplied by the VMC.
