Visakhapatnam: In a freak incident, two workers died and one sustained serious head injuries when they jumped off from the third floor of an under-construction building in an attempt to escape from the attack of domestic dog in Lalithanagar area under Dwaraka police station limits here on Thursday afternoon.

The dead were identified as N Gopi (28) and Sheik Hussain (43) and the injured T Srinivas (30), all residents of Akkayyapalem area in the city. Eyewitness said five workers were engaged in polishing of furniture in the third floor of an under-construction apartment.

  • Earlier, they requested the owner to keep the dog on leash but he did not care

On Thursday, a German Shepherd dog belonging to the owner of the building Narava Rambabu, who is residing in the fourth floor of the apartment, broke loose and came to attack the workers.

Shocked at the ferociousness of the dog, two of the workers bolted the door from inside while three others jumped to the ground from the balcony. Gopi died on the spot and Hussain was pronounced dead while undergoing treatment at Kala hospital.

Local people blamed the owner for letting loose the dog when the work was going on. They said the fully-grown dog bit Gopi, and in a bid to save his life, he jumped from the building.

The workers had earlier requested the owner to keep the dog away but he ignored their pleas. Rambabu told reporters that it was an unfortunate incident as the dog had broken loose. “Normally, the dog never attacks people but only barks. Out of fear of attack, the workers jumped off instead of staying safe in a room,” he said.

Police visited the spot and registered a case. Alleging it as sheer case of negligence, other workers demanded a criminal case be registered against the building owner Rambabu.
