Collector asks farmers to turn to horticulture crops

Kurnool: District Collector Challa Vijay Mohan said the government was providing subsidy facility for farmers cultivating horticulture crops.

Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu had also suggested Kurnool to transform into a horticulture hub. The Collector in a statement released on Friday said the government had taken up many initiatives for the conservation of water by digging farm ponds, soaking pits and bore well recharge structures.

“Water is the main source to take up cultivation, whereas in case of horticulture crops do not require much water,” he said.
The horticulture crops can even sustain the drought conditions. Farmers could reap good benefits if they take up the cultivation of horticulture crops, he assured.

He said various horticulture crops were planted in 93,499 hectares in the district. Of the various horticulture crops, the onion crop was taken up in a vast area which holds the first place, he said.

The Horticulture department is facilitating subsidies under various schemes from the Rastriya Krishi Vikas Yojana and the Horticulture Development Mission.

He said We have encouraged the farmers to reap good benefits during 2014-15, who took up cultivation of horticulture crops in an extent of 1392.47 hectares to which Rs.328.084 lakh was invested.

In 2015-16, cultivation was taken up in 2106.09 hectares by investing Rs 329.4 lakh under Horticulture Development MissionHe further said subsidy would be provided under Rasthriya Krishi Vikas Yojana for the construction of Godown for preserving the onion crops.
