Vijayawada: Department of Municipal Administration and Urban Development Principal Secretary Karikala Valavan said the State government is planning to open more English medium schools in the municipalities and municipal corporations to promote English medium education in the State.

K Valavan on Friday convened a meeting with the Teachers Unions and discussed the possibility of opening the new English medium schools.

Representatives of Municipal Teachers Federation (MTF) United Teachers Federation (UTF) Andhra Pradesh Teachers Federation (APTF) Progressive Recognised Teachers Union (PRTU) and State Teachers Union (STU) attended the meeting at the Sub-collector’s Office.

The principal secretary said he would discuss with Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development P Narayana about the opening of new English medium schools in the State.

Municipal Teachers Federation (MTF) State president S Ramakrishna said there is a shortage of teachers in many government schools and underlined the need to recruit more teachers to impart English medium education in the proposed new schools.

Representatives of some other Teachers Unions to expressed similar opinion on it.Responding to the views expressed by union leaders, the principal secretary said the municipal commissioners can recruit the teachers on a contract basis for imparting education in the proposed English medium schools. He said that the government has decided to promote English medium education in the government run schools.

K Valavan said more meetings will be conducted with the Teachers Unions in this regard. MTF leaders T Venkata Reddy, M S Imam Basha, D R Gopal Reddy and others were present at the meeting.
