Speaking at the programme, Society for Energy, Environment and Development (SEED) vice-president K Vidyasagar said food technology professionals are much in demand now with the growth of the food processing industry in the country. Food science and technology courses can be pursued for a bright career as the country’s food processing industry is registering an annual growth rate of 9 per cent, he said.

Prof B Siddhartha of Pondicherry University said the government is encouraging students to do research in microbiology by offering scholarships and other incentives with the increase in application of nanotechnology in life sciences in recent times. Research in microbiology is a bright career option for students of life sciences, he said.

Siddhartha Mahila Kalasala principal T Vijayalakshmi explained the career options in food science and technology, microbiology and biochemistry courses to students. Applied Nutrition and Microbiology Heads of Departments KN Varalakshmi and N Saritha were also present.
