Garladinne (Anantapur): The Department of Horticulture is educating farmers to organise them into multiple Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies (MACS), which would emerge as Farmers Producers Organisations (FPOs). The FPOs are expected to revolutionise agriculture sector by playing a proactive role in the farming and marketing of farm produce.

As many as eight FPOs were registered as private limited companies. Each FPO will have 500 farmers as members, who would run the company as a cluster of farmers. The company will supply seeds and other inputs apart from taking responsibility to market their own products. Sources said that these FPOs would be formally launched by Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu. Besides six more FPOs also are in the process of registration.

Speaking to The Hans India, deputy director of Horticulture Subbarayudu said that farmers were advised to form as MACS societies with 20 members and in turn form into a federation of the societies. “The federation will play the role of an FPO, which is farmers’ own private limited company, catering to multiple needs of them. The FPO will play a pivotal role in changing the dynamics of framing. Echoing the same, Andhra Pradesh Minor Irrigation Corporation (APMIC) project director M Venkateswarlu said that the FPOs would dictate terms to the market forces.

Detailing the functionalities of FPOs, NABARD Assistant General Manager Ravindra Prasad said that an action plan would be formulated by the FPOs on the business activities of the farmers. “Marketing of farm produce is the key area of intervention by FPOs. They will also play the role of a banker and finance all requirements of the farmers. Right from seed supply to supply of fertilizers and marketing of produce, FPO would function as a business entity,” he added.
