Kurnool: It is a challenge not for the cause of charity, but to uphold humanitarianism. On the lines of Ice Bucket Challenge and Rice Bucket Challenge, Blood Donation Challenge has originated in the district with a tagline that it is only for those who have guts. Red Cross Blood Bank, in collaboration with Jana Vignana Vedika, has come up with the unique challenge to overcome the acute shortage of the ‘elixir of life’ for thalassemia children.
The blood bank gets requests from about 110 thalassemia children per month who are in need of blood transfusion for their survival. The available stock of blood is inadequate to meet the growing demand for the elixir of life, which prompted the bank to come up with the novel challenge.
Under Blood Donation Challenge, donors are the real heroes who hog the limelight. The life-size flexi banners of donors will be displayed at all major junctions in the district headquarters for a fortnight. They will also get wide publicity in the social media. Certificates will be presented to them. The donors will also be honoured with shawls.
Stickers of blood donation will be provided to the donors, which can be proudly displayed on their person and vehicle. All this is meant to instill a feeling of pride in donors and to motivate them to donate blood at regular intervals without limiting their humane gesture only once in a lifetime.
Philanthropists and businessmen have come forward to bear the printing costs of flexis of blood donors. Seminars, awareness meets and short films are the chief modes of publicity for the new challenge.
Speaking to The Hans India, Red Cross Society district president G Srinivasulu Yadav said ``The Blood Donation Challenge has evoked a tremendous response from college students. If the novel campaign is promoted like a mass movement, the acute shortage of blood can be overcome to a certain extent.
In the process, precious lives can be saved.’’ Jana Vignana Vedika State treasurer B Suresh Kumar said ``We are promoting the challenge to dispel misconceptions about blood donation among people. It will also help promote scientific attitude among people, besides upholding human values.’’
R Ramesh Chandra, a youth who donated blood for 39 times so far, said ``I got a sticker in recognition of my gesture. The display of the sticker on my bike makes me feel proud of my humanitarian act. The new challenge needs to be popularised to motivate more people to voluntarily come forward to donate blood.’’
