Department of Fisheries took up the Cage Culture of Tilapia fish in Visakhapatnam district with Rs 80 lakh as it was selected one among the six districts by the government with the technical support of Tata Trust as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. 

Visakhapatnam: Cage Culture of Tilapia fish in Pedderu reservoir of V Madugula mandal in the district registered good results with 90 per cent of survival rate and the harvest is expected in 45 days.

Department of Fisheries took up the Cage Culture of Tilapia fish in Visakhapatnam district with Rs 80 lakh as it was selected one among the six districts by the government with the technical support of Tata Trust as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative.

Around 1.5 lakh small fry were brought from Rajiv Gandhi Centre for Aqua Culture, Vijayawada on January 10 and were reared with special care in Tandava reservoir for two months and finally, the survived 1.05 lakh small fry were shifted to the cages.

When contacted, Assistant Director and Joint Director (FAC), Department of Fisheries V V Rao told The Hans India that Tilapia fish being cultivated under Cage Culture are in good condition with 90 per cent survival rate.

We are expecting 45 metric tonnes of fish at the time of harvest from Visakhapatnam district. We are preferring local market to the international market. Already, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts reached the harvesting stage and a total quantity of 100 mts is expected from north coastal Andhra districts”, he explained.

When asked about the status of the proposed Hyper Fish Market at MVP Colony, hygienic Fish Market at Fishing Harbour and other small markets at various areas in the district with Rs 4.3 crore, Rao said that everything was ready for the Hyper Fish Market where dry fish and cutting zones were planned, but the Port Trust has to transfer the site.

He said that the work on the hygienic Fish Market would be taken up soon to replace the traditional selling method of fish.
Referring to the issuance of bio-metric ID cards to all the men and women involved in the fishing activity in all the coastal villages in the district in view of the coastal security, the Joint Director (FAC) informed that of the total 21,000 members, 15,000 were issued and the rest will be given by July 15.

The job of issuing ID cards was entrusted to Electronic Corporation of India (ECIL) and 14 teams have been deployed to identify the members, he added.
