Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is gearing up to operate 2,000 special buses during the Krishna Pushkaralu to be held from August 12 to 23.

With lakhs of pilgrims expected to take holy dip in River Krishna which passes via Kurnool, Guntur and Krishna districts. The river enters Kurnool district in Andhra Pradesh and passes via Guntur and Krishna districts. In fact, RTC is planning to carry 3,75,000 passengers on an average every day, said executive director, operations G Jayarao.

Though the Krishna river passes through three districts, the onus of Pushkaralu will be more on Krishna district, due to its geographical location and facilities available in and around Vijayawada city which is well connected by road, rail and flight services. Both railways and RTC will play an important role in transporting pilgrims to and fro since latter is planning to ply 2,000 special services every day.

The Krishna region of APSRTC will operate the highest number of 755 special buses, followed by Guntur district with 501 special buses. Kurnool district will operate 350 special buses.

Prakasam district and West Godavari districts run 125 and 75 special services respectively during the holy event. The remaining districts will operate around 50 special services depending on the requirement.

Top officials of the operations department are regularly monitoring the preparations being made for the special services in various districts of the State. Executive Director, operations G Jayarao told The Hans India that 8,960 trips will be operated each day for the convenience of the pilgrims and said the RTC will also pool another 1,000 extra buses to meet the requirements of the passengers during the holy event.

The department officials are preparing route maps and choosing parking places to park the buses at the ghats and transit points. In Vijayawada, the city region will operate services from Pandit Nehru bus station, Gunadala railway station, Madhura Nagar railway station and Rayanapadu railway station to the bathing ghats. The RTC officials are in touch with the city traffic police department for parking of RTC buses during Pushkaralu.

Besides, the buses will be shuttled between bathing ghats and Pushkara Nagars being planned in different parts of the city.
In order to provide basic amenities, the RTC is also constructing temporary bus shelters at different places of the city particularly along the Krishna river upstream and downstream of Prakasam barrage and Ibrahimpatnam
