The CPIM are protesting against the location of Atomic Power Plant at Kovvada in Srikakulam district stating the government would be forced to spend up to Rs.42 crore per megawatt on nuclear power at a time when the thermal sources are being produced at Rs.10 crore per megawatt.

Alleging that the plant would be only beneficial to the US companies which won't be paying compensation to the people in case of accidents, the CPIM district secretary Bhaviri Krishnamurthy said the state government is supporting the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) by diverting the Nagavalli water for the project.

Further, the district administration is being forced to speed up land acquisition even though the villagers have opposed their displacement, said the CPIM district secretary who alleged that the NPCIL officials were going out of their way to announce the details of the so-called packages.

Marxist leader Prakash Karat will be attending a meeting to explain the party’s stand over the Kovvada project to be held in Ambedkar Auditorium on Saturday evening and in Visakhapatnam on July 17.
