Amaravati: Agriculture Minister Prathipati Pulla Rao on Saturday said that he along with tobacco farmers and traders will meet Union Minister for Commerce Nirmala Sitharaman on July 19 in New Delhi to discuss tobacco ryots' problems.

He said that there is a need to regulate export of unauthorised tobacco. He said that he would request the Union Minister to instruct Tobacco Board to purchase tobacco stocks from the farmers immediately.

Addressing a press meet at his residence in Chilakaluripeta, he said that tobacco farmers are not getting remunerative prices and added that exporters too are not getting incentives for exports.

He said that tobacco farmers are demanding that the government purchase stocks from them immediately, because the board had already collected Rs 400 crore cess from them. The Minister said the board has reduced crop size to 122 million kg from 172 million kg this season.

He stressed the need to reduce tobacco crop further during the next season and motivate farmers to cultivate alternative crops. Prathipati warned traders of stern action if they sell chilli seed at higher price. He said that the government was committed to the welfare of farmers.
