Amaravati: Guntur Mirchi Yard, the biggest in Asia, is all set to introduce bar-coding system for chilli bags for the first time in the State to check irregularities. The engineering officials have already installed machines procured at a cost of Rs 1 crore and the bar-coding will come into force after a one-week trial run.

Once this system is introduced, a vehicle entering the mirchi yard premises will be recorded in the CCTV as the drivers flash their pass and barrier will open. The bar-coding tag will be stitched to the bag and it contains complete details of quality, quantity, variety, name of the farmer, name of commission agent and his code.

Being off-season, on an average 25,000 to 30,000 bags are arriving in the yard and officials are tagging bar-coding slips to them and subsequently, the training will be imparted to staff in the yard in a phased manner to speed up the bar-coding process.

However, during the season the yard would get more than one lakh bags of chilli and officials will address all glitches during the trial run.

Confirming the introduction of bar-coding, Guntur Mirchi Yard secretary T Diwakar said, “For the first time, bar-coding is being introduced in the State. Already, we have begun the trial run and will eventually resolve all the initial glitches paving the way for introduction of a fool-proof coding system.”

Meanwhile, marketing department is planning to introduce the same system in other big market yards in the State to check irregularities.
