Ongole: Kothapalli, a remote village in the district has a unique distinction. The village, consisting of 120 families, is rearing 240 bulls of world famous Ongole breed. Apart from these bulls, hundreds of cattle are seen happily grazing in the green fields and moving around the village. The village is also home for more than 2,000 buffalos. The villagers are known for their passion for agriculture. They always talk about cultivation and cattle.

Though the agriculture sector witnessed rapid changes with modern technology, the villagers still stuck to the traditional methods. They still plough their fields with the help of bulls. Due to the recent losses, the disappointed farmers had to face a challenge for fodder. Defying all odds, the villagers could successfully overcome the situation.

Even the agricultural scenario is also not quite encouraging in the village. There is no adequate water to irrigate just 6,000 acres of their land. They have to depend upon the rain god for their agri-needs. Mirchi (Chilli) is widely cultivated here followed by red gram, black gram, sesame, chick
peas etc.

The villagers acquire calves of Ongole variety and gradually train them to work in their fields. They also bring bulls other than Ongole breed from Guntur and surrounding areas. But they are affectionate towards the Ongole bulls. Interestingly they don’t use these Ongole bulls other than agriculture works like pulling the carts etc.

Surprisingly the village which is home for thousands of animals does not have a veterinary hospital. The poor animals have to die pathetically whenever they contacted any disease. A single bull is worth around Rs One lakh. Death of any animal is a huge loss for the owner.

The villagers who prefer the well being of their animals to that of their own are humbly asking for a veterinary hospital for protecting their cattle especially the rare species of Ongole bulls. In fact, this is the village in the district which has sizable population of Ongole bulls!
