Vijayawada: Students Federation India (SFI) on Wednesday demanded that the State government immediately withdraw the cases booked against the student union leaders during their agitation relating to the social welfare hostels recently.

SFI State president Y Ramu said that they organised protests in a peaceful way in front of Collectorates in all districts, demanding enhancement of mess and cosmetic charges and reopen the closed social welfare hostels.

But, the State government booked the SFI leaders of Kadapa, Kurnool and West Godavari districts under illegal cases and sent to jail, he lamented.

He further said that the government was spending only Rs 27 for each student a day in social welfare hostels which was insufficient to cater minimum needs of the students.

Besides, over 500 hostels were closed so far. The SFI was opposing the government move and organising agitations to protect the rights of poor students.

However, the student leaders were being harassed by the police with the support of State government, he alleged. Ramu demanded that the government must withdraw cases and take steps for the welfare of students.
