Tirupati: The 74th annual festival of music and dance would be organised by Tirupati based ‘Sri Thyagaraja Festival Committee (STFC)' here for 11 days from July 24 to August 3.

Addressing a media conference here on Friday, STFC executive chairman KV Ranganathan said that this year festival celebrations coincide with the 250th birth anniversary of saint and poet Thyagaraja. “This year festival was focused more on the academic side,” he added.

Accordingly, a special lecture will be delivered by a noted scholar and Madras Music Academy (MMA) member and professor Ritharajan on Thyagaraja on July 26.

He said a panel discussion led by MMA secretary Sangeetha Samrat Pappu Venugopal Rao and three other music experts and scholars including Neelarama Gopal (Karnataka), Mulukutla Brahmananda Sastry (Andhra Pradesh) and RS Jayalakshmi (Chennai) on July 27 and a presentation on Thyagaraja’s ‘Prahlada Charitham' on July 28 and a 2-hour 20 minutes drama on the life of Thyagaraja Swamy by a 26-member troupe with noted TV artiste S Varadarajan playing the lead role on July 30.Besides, Venugopal Rao and Malladi brothers will speak on ‘Potharaju’ (Telugu poet Pothana), Goparaju (poet Ramadas), who influenced Thyagaraja, on July 29.

Marking the annual festival which is popular among music and dance artists and lovers in the south, Sapthagiri Sangeetha Vidwanmani title will be conferred on two including Kadiri Gopalanath (Saxophone), and Vikku Vinayakram (Ghatam) on July 31 in recognition of their meritorious services to the Indian music.

The programme will be formally inaugurated by TTD chairman Ch Krishnamurthy on July 24 at Thyagaraja Trust building where the 11-day music and dance programme will be held every year.

The musical event would start with famous violinist TN Krishnan concert on July 24. In all, more than 20 artistes will perform in the festival including Nithyasree Mahadevan, Malladi brothers, Gayathri Girish, Bharath Sundar, Suma Sudhindra, Arthi Archana, Rathi Priya and Duddu Radika.

The event will conclude with Namani Nagalakshmi Harikatha on Thyagaraja followed by Anjaneya Utsavam on August 3. STFC secretary K Raghuram, treasurer S Narasimha Charyulu and others were present.
