Tirupati: Congress MLC C Ramachandraiah said his party is doing its best to achieve Special Category Status even as the BJP was playing a hide-and-seek game on the issue.

The Congress party has been spearheading a relentless struggle on the issue which was evident with the party managing to enlist the support of other party MPs also in the Rajya Sabha to adopt the Private Member Bill moved by its member KVP Ramachandra Rao for getting Special Category Status. He said the ruling TDP failed to come out openly to lend support to the Congress to ensure that the bill was passed in Rajya Sabha.

He wondered why Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu has not been able to strongly question the Centre for not fulfilling various promises including the Special Category Status, creation of new railway zone, special packages to backward areas and providing financial support to the State to overcome budget deficit. He flayed the TDP and its supremo for lacking commitment to the cause of Special Status.

The Congress leader further alleged that the Rs 700 crore provided by the Centre for backward districts development was diverted by the State government. Only a meagre amount was spent for the development of the areas, he said.

Meanwhile, in a separate press conference, senior TDP leader and MLC G Muddukrishnama Naidu said the responsibility of getting Special Status to the State lies solely on Union Ministers and BJP leaders M Venkaiah Naidu and Arun Jaitley because it was the duo who in the Rajya Sabha.

vociferously sought Special Category Status and packages to the State during the discussion in the House on AP Reorganisation Act two years ago and forced the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to declare these benefits on the floor of the Parliament.
