Eluru: All banking transactions in West Godavari district came to a standstill following the officers and employees of various banks went on strike on Friday.

In response to the call given by United Federation of Bank Unions (UFBU), the bank employees and officers observed the strike. The employees were protesting the merger of banks and privatisation .

As many as 582 bank branches remained closed as 6,000 employees went on the strike. Due to the strike, an estimated Rs 300 crore transactions could have been affected in the district.

In Eluru, the bank employees staged demonstrations in front of Andhra Bank Ramachandra Rao Peta branch and demanded the centre to withdraw its anti-employees policies.

UFBU district Secretary KJ Satyanarayana addressing the employees alleged that the government was trying to merge the banks and privatise the banking sector. UFBU City secretary K Srinivas and others participated in the strike.
