Nellore: Municipal Minister P Narayana said forest cover is vital for maintaining ecological balance and also for human existence. He addressed a meeting organised at VRC Grounds in city on Friday after launching the Vanam-Manam programme.

The Minister said Brazil stands first among all the countries with 56 per cent green cover while India is in tenth position with 23.68 per cent. In India, Narayana stated that truncated Andhra Pradesh is in 21st place with 26 per cent in greenery whereas Mizoram has
88.9 per cent.

The Minister said that there is every need to maintain at least 30 per cent forest cover when considered to the total area of land. He said India is facing impact of climate change due to deforestation. “AP government had planned to improve forest cover by 50 per cent in the State by 2029 as part of the Harithandhra Pradesh.

Narayana made an appeal to every family to plant at least 6 saplings in a year.City Mayor SK Abdul Aziz stated they had created a WhatsApp number and students can send status of planted saplings periodically through the number for maintaining data. Joint Collector Md Imtiyaz said they have plans to record the progress of planted saplings by linking with geo-tagging process.

He said Nellore and many places had witnessed unseasonal rains due to deforestation and impact of climate change. This can be addressed only with plantation drive. Though the Forest department had planned to plant 8 lakh saplings on Friday but it was only
5.27 lakh.

Vanam Manam special officer and Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Dr Mohammad Illyas Rizvi said majority of forest areas in the State were degraded due to various reasons and the State government had planned to improve green cover from 26 per cent to 50 per cent.

The Minister planted saplings at Kendriya Vidyalaya in Kothur after addressing the public meeting. MLC B Ravichandra, former legislator MSK Reddy, TDP city president K Srinivasulu Reddy, TDP leaders Ch Narasimha Rao, T Anuradha, DFO (Social Forestry) Chankaya Raju and other senior officials were present.

Officials, students from local schools, and voluntary organisations took out a huge rally from Gandhi Statue to VRC Grounds where the public meeting held.
